Yes…..I said Dolphin! How cool is this?
Koa, an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, is coaxed onto a transport mat during a Rim of the Pacific 2012 exercise. Twenty-two nations, more than 40 ships and submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC exercise from Jun.29 to Aug. 3. Koa, an Atlantic Bottlenose dolphin, is shown being transported in a rigid-hulled inflatable boat boat, en route to a MH-53E Sea Dragon of Helmineron Fourteen. The Navy uses dolphins operated by Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 1, to locate and mark mines for neutralization or exploitation. That is so cool. But how do dolphins detect mines? Through echolocation?
Awesome! It is great to see the work of the MWDs as well as how other species’ innate skills can be utilized to assist in keeping areas safer for all species whether those that live there or those that visit it. Love it and love dolphins!

That is so cool. But how do dolphins detect mines? Through echolocation?
Honestly not sure Karen…. I will try to find out this weekend. Anyone out there know the answer to this one….any speculation? BTW….I grew up watching Flipper…how can you not love dolphins?

Hi Kelly. I thought this was so cool. I was laughing when I saw the pictures! I watched Flipper growing up…… I know what these dolphins can do! LOL.
